Food Writing Lives is a series of snapshots of working writers who are carving career paths in the brave new world of food media today. In the first installment, Dorie Greenspan shares her best career move, her first writing assignment and her advice to aspiring food writers.
Says Greenspan,
“There have,” she said, “never been any guarantees in the food writing life. You do what comes toward you. You have fun. You learn as much as you can. You put it together, project by project, you adjust course, keep in the flow, never stand still and never say ‘no’,” she said, “You may not make a great living, but you’ll have a really interesting life.”

Touch a star-fruit to see what the skin is like, smell the clementine, listen to the talkers on the train, watch the sunrise again and again. Food writing is all about the senses and the more you hone yours, the stronger your work will be.–Monica Bhide
